Beijing Olympic Village Receives LEED Gold Award
According to the news from Xinhuanet, the Beijing Olympic Village designed with environmental-friendly concept in mind, won the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold award on Wednesday, 13th of August. The head of the Beijing Olympic Village, Chen Zhili, received the award from the U.S Treasury Henry Paulson who presented on behalf of the US Green Building Council.
Chen Zhili, who is also the vice president for the Beijing Organizing Committee revealed that the three key concepts, “Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People’s Olympics” have been fully integrated and implemented at the Beijing Olympic Games. This award is an affirmation for the increasing cooperation between US and China in the clean energy field.
A huge amount of solar cells and geothermal heat pumps are implemented into the Beijing Olympic Village, which are the key driving factors behind this green village.
In accordance with the US-China cooperation, Chen Zhili hoped that such exchanges could popularize the energy conversation technology and pollutant reduction technology as this will eventually help to develop the world into a more energy-efficient and self sustainable place.
Paulson called the village an example of U.S.-China cooperation in energy conservation and environmental protection, saying the Beijing Games have the best environmental protection in Olympic history.
The Beijing Olympic Village may have the cutting-edge technologies to “help” the environmental cause, but is the situation getting any better? Guess its more like a showcase of technology than anything else.
